ASSERTIVENESS
Our past experience (such as our upbringing and interactions with our parents and teachers) can be
one of the major factors that makes us feel less assertive, or make us 'not believe in ourselves' later in life. I will try to understand your situation, and provide suitable strategies or training to help you improve your assertiveness.
BEREAVEMENT
Grief and loss seem to be such a natural part of our lives, but sometimes we are not aware of the less obvious losses that we might encounter (e.g. loss of health due to serious illness, loss of independence due to dementia, loss of identity due to transition issues). Together, and at your own pace, we will find a comfortable way for you to explore the pain you are experiencing, and help you to restore your life when you are ready.
ANXIETY
1 in 6 people experiences anxiety and/or depression. Whilst anxiety is something we all experience from time to time, not being able to manage anxiety, and feeling as if anxiety is consuming your everyday life, can be problematic. Common anxiety issues include: general anxiety disorder (GAD), health anxiety due to serious illnesses or long-term conditions, and social anxiety. I use a combination of approaches and techniques to help you understand the reasons for your anxiety, and how you can feel in control of your life again.
DEPRESSION
Whether you are experiencing 'low mood' or have been diagnosed with depression, counselling can be useful. It can help you to understand some possible reasons behind your depression, and look at some causes that might have triggered it. We can discuss some practical ways to manage your low mood or depression better.
STRESS
Stress is the feeling we have when we find the situation or task we are dealing with is bigger than our ability to cope. While we feel stressed from time to time, long-term stress relating to some specific situations (such as financial difficulties, relationship issues or major health problems) can incapacitate our everyday lives. Through counselling, I can help you to look at the factors contributing to your stress, and practise relaxation techniques and mindfulness with you for better stress management.
CROSS-CULTURAL ISSUES
You may be staying or living in the UK as a foreign student, worker or partner to someone who is native British. Being 'foreign' sometimes brings about issues relating to identity, losses, adjustment and adaptation due to linguistic and cultural differences. Sometimes such issues may come up in situations before we realise. Or, perhaps you are a young adult with parents who come from a foreign country. Tension within the family may occur due to generational differences as well. My empathy could help you to understand your situation better.
CHRISTIAN COUNSELLING
Having a Christian faith might make you look at yourself and the world in a different perspective from other people. As a result, sometimes you might encounter clashes with other people in your value system, moral standard, and sense of integrity. You might feel reluctant to conform to other standards, but at the same time struggle to maintain your own. This is most obvious when you have to make important life decisions, or when you are facing a life crisis. Christian counselling can offer you a space to look at those difficult encounters in a Christian context.
